Are You Coping Better Than a

1st Grader?

Honestly? Some days no.

My first graders navigate disagreement better than most adults I know (including myself). I once watched two six-year-olds hold completely opposite beliefs about how the world works, say so out loud to each other, and go right back to drawing Minecraft characters together.

Here's the thing: they didn't put each other in boxes. They were two kids who liked Minecraft, and what they believed about the world was one thing they knew about each other — not the whole story.

Somewhere between first grade and now, most of us forgot how to do that.

Ten questions. No advice.

I spend my days teaching six-year-olds how to name what they're feeling, how to notice what their body is telling them,

and how to come back to themselves afterward.

Nobody ever taught me that.

We hand kids the language and the practice and the permission — and then somewhere around adulthood

we quietly assume everyone figured it out, and we stop asking.

This is for you if you're good at asking other people how they're doing and bad at answering it yourself. If you've noticed you have a work version, a family version, and a you version, and you're not sure which one is real anymore. If you'd rather have a good question than more advice.

No app. No streak. No sharing. Just ten questions worth sitting with, one at a time.

Ten questions about being who you actually are. No framework to learn, no one grading your answers — just the things my students still know that the rest of us had to unlearn.

Always in flannel, always reflecting from recess.
